The other day my wife and I were in Gastonia and I saw a police officer get out of his car and walk into a convenience store.

Kinja'd!!!

Watching him, I had a thought I never thought about a cop before:

“I bet I could take that guy in a foot race.”

He was about 5'8" and every bit of 300 lbs. I’m 6'3" and 320.

But was it a Pentastar or a Hemi

Pentastar - looked to be a city patrol vehicle. All of the NC SHP cars are Hemi.

That’s what they have cars, radios, helicopters, and also other officers for.

Most cops giving out speeding tickets for local income will never be involved in a foot race.

But could you outrun his taser or bullets?

I always think about the fact 90% of officers I see could never keep up to me if I decided to run on foot. Sure they got a radio but in my rural area it’d be 15 minutes plus before they’d have backup.

Still don’t know why and how morbidly obese guys work as police.

When I see some of the officers on TV during the news of another shooting it amazes me the size some of the officers get. Surely the U.S. Has an annual fitness test each year like the U.K.

Judging by how erratically people seem to fire and the range of the standard service weapon... SERPENTINE, BABOU!

I wouldn’t be surprised if most departments didnt.

No. I’m just making a statement about the expectation that a police officer should be more fit than a fat schmuck who works in an office.

Certainly do. If by “fitness test” you mean, “Still cool with the chief test.”

The only police I know who routinely work out and stay fit are ones gunning for promotions or have too much independence from leadership’s perspective. Basically, ones who either have to be or don’t want to give the boss an excuse.

I’m in a small town, I know the entire force. The skinny ones are ambitious, the chubby ones are brown-nosers and there is nothing in the middle.

They had a few pentastars back with the first run of chargers, back in 06 07. They actually were just pulled a few years ago, didn’t go for much on surplus. 1st gen Hemis go for like $6k.

Kinja'd!!!1

That's crazy. Here there are different levels of fitness depending on what department you work for such as community policing, traffic, roads, Special Operations, Firearms, Royal and Diplomatic, etc...

There are tests for State patrols and such, but the small town officers, I’m sure they had to pass on their way in, but I can’t imagine 5 of the 12 in my town have passed any tests, or plates of food recently.

No they didn’t. The pentastar engine wasn’t used in anything but test mules until 2011.

Lol. I still wouldn’t run from a U.S. police officer, due to the propensity to shoot and then make up a story afterwards.

U.S. police culture is completely alien to me. We get police who shop in my store with Glock 19s and it’s ‘hey, you guys okay? I hope you r having a Q night tonight’ (police are quite superstitious and you never say the word ‘quiet’ but say the letter Q so as not to tempt fate).

Even when we have high security court cases from outside the county (it’s common to get high profile cases from larger cities as where my city is foreign to outsiders and planning an escape would be very difficult) and police are on high alert with MP4s and Glocks, we can still approach them and ask directions, the time or generally shoot the breeze until asked to move away by the police as there is movement around them, etc...

I’d like to click the star to like your comment but I can’t.

It would be crass of my to like something that is such a shame.

The police are there to protect us and make us feel secure, not to make us fear for our lives at the first dealings.

With fear of sounding like the ignorant foreigner, the U.S. police need to learn how to talk and interact with people and not have their default be shouting and shooting, they should be a last resort and only when it there is risk to life.
